As a church school. we pride ourselves on our SMSC provision, which has been re-validated in our last SIAMS inspection as outstanding.
Children have opportunities to xplore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.
Children can recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.
Children use a range of social skills; participate in the local community; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the 'British values' of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance.
Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.
Every year we have a special SMSC focus for the school where we create though-provoking enrichment opportunities across the year which develop the children’s ability to demonstrate skills, attitudes and values that will allow them to participate fully inand contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
Last year our focus was “Who Do We Think We Are?” (WDWTWA). Last year we explored and celebrated with the children our place within Cornwall, within Great Britain & within the world. We wanted to be loud & proud in celebrating our differences as well as our recognising all that we have in common with people around the world. We also wanted to be inspired to be the very best that we can be both now and into the future.
This year our focus is “Value in Action” •is to provide learning experiences & opportunities, like Word Values Day on October 19th,to support our pupils’ development as socially responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to the community, through learning and application of values, knowledge and skills.
Friendship & Anti-Bullying
At Archbishop Benson School we take a strong stance on all forms of bullying or discrimination. We believe that in the vast majority of cases bullying occurs where friendship issues are not addressed effectively when they first occur. This is why we have been very proactive in creating our 5 Steps to Friendship Code document (see below).
Every year we have a whole-school Friendship/Anti-Bullying focus to empower children develop the skills and attitudes to be able to build and maintain positive relationships within our school family and beyond.
Last year our focus was “We All Bee-Long!” The children engaged in a variety of thought-provoking opportunities ranging from National Anti-Bullying Week in November (our annual blue theme links to the B.L.U.E. slogan which stands for Be Lovely and Understanding to Everyone) to celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week in February.
This year our focus is “Power for Good” and during National Anti-Bullying Week, we celebrated the theme of “All Different, All Equal” by organising Odd Socks Day, It was lovely to see how the children expressed their individuality through a wonderful array of odd socks
We are so pleased that, based on the rolling average over the past 3 years, 92% of the parents who returned the parental survey agreed with the statement - There is a good standard of behaviour at school. We have noted that less parents agreed with, or perhaps were clear about, our whole-school approach to promoting friendship and responding to bullying. At a Parents’ Forum, where we discussed how the school responds to bullying.
