Vision for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)Â
âI can do all things through Him who strengthens meâ (Philippians 4:13)
âWith fun and learning, hand in hand, all things are possible.â
At the heart of our Modern Foreign Languages teaching is the belief that achievement opens doors and shapes future life opportunities for our children. Guided by our school motto - âWith fun and learning, hand in hand, all things are possibleâ - we choose approaches that provide consistency, richness and purpose across the school. We are committed to ensuring that pupils who may face additional barriers to learning have full access to high-quality language teaching and can experience success alongside their peers.
Our MFL curriculum enables pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in both spoken and written forms. Learning is rooted in familiar, meaningful contexts and builds pupilsâ knowledge of phonology, grammar and vocabulary. We aim to teach languages in ways that reflect our Christian ethos and embody our school values of Respect, Creation, Fellowship, Wisdom and Hope. Careful scaffolding, modelling and inclusive planning ensure that all children, including those who may face additional barriers, can develop confidence, good pronunciation and fluency.
Languages enrich childrenâs experiences and broaden their cultural horizons. Wherever possible, meaningful cross-curricular links are made. We want children to develop a secure balance of spoken and written language that lays strong foundations for future language learning at Key Stage 3. The curriculum provides regular repetition and revisiting of vocabulary and phrases. French and Spanish are taught for 30 minutes weekly in KS2. Learning incorporates a range of active and verbal lessons with a smaller focus on written work.⯠Children will be encouraged to engage in games and activities that embeds their learning. Work is recorded in childrenâs MFL folders, providing evidence of progress and achievement.
Children are assessed informally throughout lessons so teachers can recognise what pupils know and what they are ready to learn next. Assessment and feedback help teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of all pupils and ensure gaps are addressed. Pupils are supported to develop confidence in speaking and writing, apply learned vocabulary creatively, and cultivate curiosity and appreciation for the cultures of French- and Spanish-speaking countries.
We seek to:
- deliver the aims and content of the National Curriculum through the âKapowâ Scheme of Work
- deliver French and Spanish to children in Years 3â6
- plan inclusive lessons that enable all children, including those who may face additional barriers, to develop confidence, good intonation and pronunciation and increasing fluency, creativity and spontaneity
- develop childrenâs awareness of the cultures of countries where French and Spanish are spoken
- nurture a passion for languages and a commitment to high-quality MFL teaching
- foster independence, enabling children to draw upon a range of authentic sources
- support pupils to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the grammatical structures they have learned
- encourage appreciation of a range of writing in the languages studied
- continue developing our own practice and share effective approaches
