Vision for Music at Archbishop Benson C of E School

‘I can
do all things through Him who strengthens me’ (Philippians 4:13)

‘With fun and learning, hand in hand, all things are possible.’

At Archbishop Benson School, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of music throughout every child’s school journey. Music plays a central role in daily school life, offering children meaningful opportunities to experience, enjoy and create music in both big and small ways.

Throughout the school year, pupils are provided with a wide range of musical opportunities. Collective performances such as Christmas concerts, school choirs, Eucharist services and class assemblies enable children to perform with confidence and showcase their musical talents. In addition, pupils have the opportunity to take part in a unique live music experience through our Rocksteady programme. We are very thankful to be able to facilitate this twice a week and, supported by an experienced and enthusiastic team, the children involved flourish.

While all pupils are encouraged to take part in whole-school musical activities, there are also opportunities for individual instrumental tuition. Our highly skilled peripatetic teachers currently offer lessons in violin, flute, guitar, drums, piano, trumpet and voice. Musical achievements are celebrated through termly recitals, featuring solo, group and ensemble performances, which are always well attended by families and the school community.

We are proud to offer both KS1 and KS2 choirs, who regularly lead our Eucharist services and perform at school events, including school fayres. These choirs are led by school staff and project leaders from Truro Cathedral, providing a traditional, Christian-focused choir. Our KS2 choir is free for all children involved, allowing children from all backgrounds to be brought together by music.

Music at Archbishop Benson School is taught in line with the National Curriculum, with a focus on the three key areas: listening, composing and performing. From Reception through to Year 6, pupils explore these strands through topic-linked learning as well as dedicated music lessons and enriching musical experiences.

To support high-quality music teaching and learning, Archbishop Benson School uses the Kapow Primary music scheme.
