The School Games Mark Silver Award
We are absolutely delighted to have just been awarded the School Games Mark Silver Award for the 2016-17 year. The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust, to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. We are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year. Well done to all the children and staff.
Grass Track Cycling Qualifier
On Tuesday 19th September 2017, eight of our Year 5 and 6s went to Penryn College to take part in the Peninsula Area Grass Track Cycling Qualifier. It was a fantastic afternoon’s cycling and the children all had a good time. In the end we came 5th. Well done to all of the cyclists and a huge thank you to Mrs Glanville and Mr Sims for taking the children to Penryn.
Girls’ Football Festival
On Friday 29th September 2017, ten Year 5 girls went to Penair for a girl’s football festival. They had a great time and enjoyed practising their football skills.

Year 3/4 Badminton Festival
On Friday 6th October 2017, 12 of our Year 4s went to Richard Lander School to take part in a badminton festival and qualifier for the Cornwall School Games. We had two teams of 6, Team Archbishop and Team Benson. Both teams took part in a range of games, activities and challenges involving skills linked to badminton. Both teams did really well! Team Archbishop came 5th out of 11 schools and managed to qualify for the Peninsula finals as the second placed Penair feeder school. Team Benson also did well to finish 7th. A huge thank you to Mrs Glanville and Mrs Nolan for taking the children to Richard Lander.
Year 5 and 6 Boys' football matches against Mount Hawke
On Monday 9th October 2017, we played our first boy's football matches of the season. Our A team lost but our B team won. Well done to all of the boys.
Year 3 and 4 Football Tournament
On Friday 13th October 2017, 17 of our Year 4s went to Penair School to take part in the Penair feeder schools football competition. There were 9 teams in total and it was a first ever tournament for many of our players. It was a fantastic afternoon's football and both of our teams did extremely well. Our A team were unbeaten all afternoon, winning 6 and drawing 2 of their games, to win the competition. Our B team also played really well, scoring some excellent goals, and came 7th.

Boys' Football Matches Against Bosvigo
On Monday 16th October 2017, our Year 5 & 6 boys' football A and B teams played against Bosvigo School.
Our A team were playing a league game and delivered an excellent performance to win 5-0. Our B team also played extremely and well and scored some fantastic goals in a convincing 5-1 victory. Well done to all of the boys!
Cornish Pirates Tag-Rugby Festival
On Wednesday 18th October 2017, fifteen of our Year 5s went to Richard Lander School to take part a Tag-Rugby festival organised by the Cornish Pirates Community Rugby programme. This is the culmination of the weekly coaching sessions that the whole of Year 5 have enjoyed with Pirates' community coach, Sam Teasdale, this term.
It was a fantastic afternoon's rugby. We played 6 games, winning 2, drawing one and losing two. The children improved with every game that they played. Well done to all of the children and huge thanks to Mrs Glanville and Mr Thomas for taking the children to Richard Lander.
Year 5 and 6 Badminton Competition
On Thursday 19th October 2017, eight of our Year 6s went to Richard Lander to take part in a badminton competition. It was a great afternoon of sport and a lot of fun was had by all. Well done to all of the players and a huge thank you to Mrs Glanville and Mrs Nolan for taking the children.
Truro Primary Schools Football Tournament
On Friday 3rd November 2017, our boys' football team went to Truro College to take part in the Truro Primary Schools Football Tournament.
We started well with a 3-0 victory against Kea followed by a 1-0 win against Bosvigo. We then beat TLA B 8-0 and finished the group stage with a 7-0 victory against Shortlanesend. Next up was a quarter-final against Kea B which we won 3-0. Finally, we were unlucky to lose 1-0 to St Agnes in the semi-final. Overall, it was a good afternoon's football and we played really well, scoring 22 goals and only conceding 1 all afternoon.
As we finished as the highest placed team in the Penair cluster, we now qualify for the Peninsula finals later in the year.
Well done to the boys and thank you to Mr Thomas, Mrs Glanville, Mrs Phillips and all of our kind parents for helping to take the children to Truro College.
Boys' Football Matches v Truro Prep School.
On Monday 6th November 2017, 33 of our Year 5 and 6 boys went to Truro Prep School to play in four football matches. Our A team match was a league game. We played really well and won 5-1, scoring some excellent goals. The B, C and D games were friendlies and all three were close. Our B team drew 2-2, our C team lost 2-1 and our D team lost 1-0.

Boys' Football v Kea School
On Friday 17th November 2017, our Year 5 and 6 football team played against Kea School in a league match. It was an extremely exciting and action packed match. In the end, we triumphed 3-2 with goals from Sid, Alfie L and Alfie T. Well done to all of the boys.
Boys' Football matches v Truro Learning Academy
On Tuesday 21st November 2017, 19 of our Year 5 and 6s went to Truro Learning Academy. Our A teram played against their A team in a County Cup match. It was an exciting game in very windy conditions. We played way and scored some good goals to win 3-1. Alfie L scored two and Jake one. Our B team also played their A team in a friendly match. It was a really good, close and hard fought match which finished in a 0-0 draw.

Boys' football league match v Threemilestone School
On Thursday 23rd November 2017, our Year 5 and 6 boys' football team played against Threemilestone in the Truro Schools' football league. It was an exciting game and a great performance from our boys. We played some scintillating attacking football and scored some great, team goals. Alfie L capped a brilliant game with a hat trick and Jayden contributed a superb individual performance. Sid, Jake and Thomas G also scored good goals. They were supported by excellent games from Tom H, Joe and Oliver B.

Girls' Football County Championships
On Friday 24th November 2017, our girls' football team went to Penryn College to take part in the County Championships. They did fantastically well, winning 3 games, drawing 2 and losing 1 to finish third in the county.
Well done to all of the girls and a huge thank you to Mr Sims and Mrs Fleet for coaching the girls and to Mrs Glanville for driving them there in the minibus.
Truro Schools Gymnastics Competition
On Friday 24th November 2017, 8 of our gymnasts went to Aspire Gymnastics Academy to take part in the Truro Primary Schools Gymnastics Competition. It was an excellent afternoon's gymnastics and all of the children did incredibly well. Our club gymnasts’ team came second overall and our school gymnasts’ team came first overall in their category! 6 of our 8 gymnasts have also qualified for the next round in February.
Well done to all of the children and a huge thank you to Mrs Lyndon for coaching the girls. Thank you also to all of the parents who helped walk them to the competition.
KS2 Sportshall Athletics - Cornwall School Games Qualifier
On Friday 1st December Mrs Williams took 18 Y3 & 4 athletes, followed by 18 Y5 & 6 athletes to Penair School to compete in this exciting Cornwall School Games Qualifier. The children really enjoyed the range of disciplines which included relays, sprints, throwing and jumping. They displayed superb sportsmanship in a very tense and highly exhilarating event.
The Y3/4 team managed to finish 1st overall. The scores were as follows:
1st Archbishop Benson 342 points
2nd Bosvigo 338 points
3rd Devoran 296
The Y5/6 team also came 1st in their afternoon session. The scores were as follows:
1st Archbishop Benson 340 points
2nd Bosvigo 324 points
3rd Devoran 314 points
Their behaviour and team spirit was excellent and they did themselves and the school proud. Well done to both teams!
All 36 athletes will now go onto represent the Truro area Primary Schools Sportshall Athletics at Penryn College in the New Year.

School cross-country races
On Monday 4th December 2017, this year’s Key Stage 2 cross-country races and Christmas fun run took place. It was a fantastic, fun and well contested afternoon of cross-country running. The house cup was the most closely competed in recent memory, with all four house separated by just a few points. In the end, Grindal were victorious. Well done to all of the children and a huge thank you to Mrs Williams for all of her hard work organising the event. Thank you also to all of our parent and staff helpers and supporters. Special mention must go to our fabulous hares, Mrs Bullen and Mrs Harrold.
Year 3 and 4 Feetbeat Dance Competition
On Friday 8th December 2017, ten of our Year 3 and 4 dancers went to Richard Lander School to take part in a Feetbeat dance competition. The children did really well and came 4th overall. Thank you to Mrs Medcalf for teaching the children and to Mrs Glanville and Mrs Nolan for taking them to Richard Lander.
Table Tennis Schools County Team Championships
On Thursday 14th December, 16 of our children went to Penryn College to take part in the Table Tennis Schools County Team Championships. It was a great day's table tennis and all of our players did really well. Our boys A team came second overall in the county. They won their group after beating both St Francis and King Charles 8-0. They reached the final where they lost a great match against a very strong Bosvigo team. Our boys B team also played very well, beating Bosvigo B and our C team and ended up coming third overall. Our boys C team drew an exciting match with Bosvigo B and lost to our B team. Our girls team also played really well, coming joint third. They beat King Charles before losing to Bosvigo.
