We have enjoyed great success in a wide range and variety of sports. Thank you to all of our staff and parents for all that they have done this year to make this possible.

Hockey Cornwall School Games Finals

Cornwall School Games Finals

On Friday 30th June, our tennis and golf teams went to the finals of the Cornwall School Games after qualifying from area competitions.

Our tri-golf team were in Launceston and competed against seven other teams from around the county. After the opening ceremony, the whole team played some fantastic golf and racked up huge amounts of points in the various activities and games. At the end of the day, at the closing ceremony, the winner was announced…Archbishop Benson! We were County Champions! Well done to all of the players and thank you to Mr Thomas and Mrs Glanville for taking them.

Both our Year 3&4 and Year 5&6 tennis teams were at the Indoor Tennis centre in Bodmin. It was an excellent day’s tennis in both competitions.

Our Year 5&6 team faced some very strong teams and the standard was very high. They played some excellent, close matches which were a pleasure to watch. They ended up coming 7th in the county. Well done!

Our Year 3&4 team played very well and got stronger and stronger as the day went on. We won two and narrowly lost one of our group games to qualify for the semi-finals, where we faced Mount Hawke. We played well but they were just too strong. This meant that we were in a third place play-off for the bronze medal. It was a fantastic game and all of our players saved their best tennis for when it mattered. In the end, we won the nail biting encounter by one point and were presented with our bronze medals. Well done to our Year 3&4s- third in the whole County!

Year 5 Tennis Festival at Penair School

On Thursday 15th June 2017, 12 of our Year 5 children went to Penair to take part in a friendly tennis festival. It was a really fun afternoon full of tennis games and activities.

Thank you to Mr Thomas and Mr Sims for accompanying the children and to Mrs Glanville for driving the children to Penair.

Year 4 tennis competition

On Monday 12th June 2017, our Year 4 tennis team went to Truro Lawn Tennis Club for the area tennis competition.

Our team did fantastically well and played some great tennis! Oscar won all of his four matches, Luke won 3 and drew 1 and Laura and Maisy won 3 and lost 1. This meant that we came second overall out of all of the schools to qualify for the Cornwall School Games on 30th June.

A huge well done to all of our players and a big thank you to Mrs Glanville for taking the children.

County Cricket Championships Area Qualifier

On Friday 26th May 2017, we took two boys’ and one girls’ cricket teams to Newquay Cricket Club for the area qualifier of the County Cricket Championships. It was the first ever competition for many of our players.

Our boys’ A team did fantastically well, getting better and better as the tournament went on. We won our first two games comfortably, setting up a deciding match against a strong St Stephens side. We batted well and gave ourselves a good chance, Daniel in particular scoring very heavily in the final two overs. However, it was our excellent bowling and fielding which won us the game, our group and a place in the County finals. Our boys’ B team also played well and improved with each game. Overall, they won one game and lost two, just missing out on qualification. It was a first ever game for our girls’ team and, despite a sharp learning curve, they had a successful afternoon. They came second to also qualify for the County Finals in July. Well done girls!

Thank you to Mrs Glanville, Mrs Phillips and all of the parents for driving the children to Newquay.

Netball Year 5 House Matches

On Thursday 25th May, our netball house matches for Year 5 took place. 26 children competed in a fantastic afternoon’s netball organised and umpired very kindly by Mrs Olds.

In a very closely fought first semi-final, Islip defeated Beckett 4-3 with a ‘golden goal’ after the match finished 3-3. In the second semi-final, a very impressive Tennison were 8-0 victors against Grindal. This meant that Beckett faced Grindal in the third and fourth place play off. Beckett played well to win 3-0.

The final was between the free-scoring Islip and Tennison teams. An exciting final with some fantastic netball on display ended in a 7-3 victory for Tennison.

Well done to all the players and a huge thank you to Mrs Olds for organising and umpiring the tournament. Also, a massive thank you to Mrs Olds and Mrs Hirst for coaching the Year 5s this year- some superb netball played during the house matches demonstrated the excellent progress that they have made.

Hockey Peninsula Finals

On Friday 28th May 2017, our Year 6 hockey team went to Penair School for the Peninsula Hockey Finals. We qualified by winning the Truro area tournament in the Spring term. It was a tough day’s competition against the best teams from the Falmouth, Penryn, Redruth, Camborne and Helston areas.

Our first match was against Grade Ruan. We played well and won 3-0. Next up, were Portreath and we won 1-0. Our third and final group game was against King Charles. Although we lost 1-0, they fielded too many boys (you have to have 3 boys and 3 girls on the pitch) so the result was annulled and we qualified as group winners.

In the semi-final we faced Mylor. We played some excellent hockey to secure a 2-0 victory and a place in the final, against Mount Hawke. Unfortunately, Mount Hawke were just too strong and were were defeated 2-0.

Well done to our hockey A team: Katie, Dulcie, Lillian, Maisy, Sam, Harry, Daniel and Oliver. A huge thank you to Mrs James for coaching the team so well and to Mrs Glanville for driving the children there in the minibus.

Peninsula School Sport Partnership Mini Basketball Finals

On Wednesday 26th of April 2017, the A-team for basketball (Freddie I  our Captain and star scorer, Daniel P back up star scorer, Caden, Max D, Maisie M, Evie G and Noah H) went to Penryn College to play the Peninsula finals, having had a superb victory at the Penair Partner Primary competition at the beginning of February.

The competition this time was really stiff- with teams from Roskear, St.Mary’s Catholic, Trevithick, Mullion, Constantine, Threemilestone and ourselves.

We had not had the chance to practice unfortunately since our victory in February. However we won our first match against Roskear in great style 14-4. It was however our only victory out of the 6 games we played in the round robin competition. We ended up finishing 6 out of the 7 teams ahead of Roskear- we rallied in our final match against Mullion and were winning till the last moments of the game with a final score of 10-8. Freddie I and Daniel P doing great impressions of the ‘Highland Globe Trotters’ scoring with great style .

Mr Issaka, Freddie I’s Dad is a PE Teacher and he was there coaching us in new skills and tactics from the side line. He was assisted by Mr Groves Evie G’s Dad and one of our school Governors, timing so that substitution were done at equal intervals. Mrs Phillips was a great support shouting encouragement from the side line.

Basketball is really great fun and we had a fantastic time even if we did not win the competition, the other teams were really strong and have Basketball clubs in their schools. It would be great to have a club in our school as well.

A very special thank you to Mrs Robillard for driving some of us down to Penryn. Also thanks to Mr Issaka for coaching us from the side line, Mr Groves from taking us there and back and support on day, and Mrs Phillips for her support and making it happen on the day.

 Evie G (6FT)

Cornwall School Games - County Finals: Indoor athletics

Well done to the year 3 & 4 team who qualified for the county finals of the Indoor Athletics.  This really exciting event was held at Truro School on Friday 21st April 2017, with eight primary schools in Cornwall qualifying for this final round.

The children all participated in two track and two field events, over the course of the morning.  The results were as follows:

3rd - Archbishop Benson School

2nd - Goonhavern Primary School

1st - St Columb Minor School

Our team of 18 children all received a Cornwall School Games tee-shirt for representing the Peninsula area and a huge bronze medal each.  They also had the opportunity to meet with the guest triathlete for the day - paraolympian David Hill.  A special well done goes to Maisy P, who managed 50 speed bounces in 20 seconds and beat David Hill who only managed 43.

Thank you also to all the parents and grandparents who came to support.

Mrs J Williams (Athletics Teacher)

Tri-Golf Competition

On Tuesday 18th April 2017, ten of our children went to Truro Golf Club to take part in the area competition for Tri-Golf. We competed against 8 other schools. There were 8 skills stations with different activities for putting, chipping and driving. We got awarded points for each station depending on how well our team did at the activity. The school with the most points over all 8 stations were the winners.

All of our golfers did really well. Noah, Benji and Freddie excelled especially in the driving activities while Perran, Poppy and Katie’s putting skills were excellent. Maisy and Lily had superb chipping accuracy and Callum and Ellie had amazing all round golf skills.

Overall, we did fantastically well and came second. This means that we qualify for the Cornwall School Games Finals in Bude on 30th June.

Well done to all of our golfers and a huge thank you to Mr Thomas and Mrs Glanville for taking the children.

Netball

On Monday, in beautiful sunshine, our Year 5 A and B netball teams participated in their first 7 a side tournament hosted by Truro High School, where 18 teams were present.  The teams were delighted to be wearing the smart  brand new red and black kit – Thank you to FABB for the donation to purchase kit and netball equipment and to Grant Ellis of Ellis Electrical who has kindly sponsored the tops.

A team

The A team’s first match was against Truro Prep’s A team, they were a brilliant Year 6 team who managed to score goals at every opportunity, unfortunately we lost the game 8-0.  Our second game was against St Agnes B team, we were pleased with a 0-0 draw.  Our third game against Bosvigo school saw us winning up to the last few minutes with a great goal from Poppy, the game finally drew 1-1.  Our play improved and we went on to win our next 3 matches, the first of these was against Truro High School’s C team where we won 4-1, with Ella scoring 3 goals and Silvenna 1.  Next we secured a win against Kea School 2-1 with goals again being scored by Silvenna and Ella.  Our last game was against our friends, Archbishop Benson’s B team, Silvenna scored the first goal followed by another 4 goals from Ella finishing our last match with a 5-0 victory. This placed us in 9th place out of the 18 teams – a great achievement!

Well done to the A team - Ella, Evie, Silvenna (captain), Olivia H, Jayden, Jake and Poppy

B Team

For some of the team this was the first time they had played in a match, they started well but were up against Threemilestone School’s A team, who won 12-0.  But we came back fighting with an impressive win over Devoran, 2-0, both goals being scored by Hannah.  We then lost our next matches, 5-0 to Truro Prep School B team and 3-0 to Kea, our defenders, Florrie and Chandler worked really hard during these matches.  Although we lost our next game against Truro High School’s C team 2-1 Ashleigh scored an amazing goal.  Our final match saw us play our own A team which we lost 5-0.  This meant we finished the tournament in 11th place out of the 18 teams which was another great achievement!

Well done to the B team – Gaby, Olivia G, Chandler, Ashleigh, Elowenn, Florrie, Hannah (captain) and Gracie

Thank you to Mrs Reynard, Mrs Ellis and Mrs Binding for helping us with the teams.

This brings the netball season to a close – we have had a great first season and are looking forward to more training and matches next year.  The Year 5 pupils have been brilliant to coach and have done amazingly well both in the league and during tournaments, showing great skill, team work and sportsmanship.  We are very proud of them all.

Truro Primary Schools Girls’ Tournament

On Friday 24th March 2017, Mrs Fleet and Mrs Sims took two girls’ football teams to Truro College to take part in the Truro Primary Schools competition. It was a fantastic afternoon’s football and both teams did extremely well.

A team

The A team played 6 group games, winning 5 and drawing one to Threemilestone. They managed to get into the final against St Agnes! The final’s time ended before either team had scored. Luckily, in the last 30 seconds of extra time, Evie Groves took a kick in, scoring the winning goal. We were Truro champions! The woman of the tournament was Silvenna Massey, who scored over half the goals! In the end the A team won and are looking forward to playing in the next matches.

By Abigail Taylor & Evie Groves 6FT.

B team

The B team played 5 matches. Everybody played well, but players we particularly noticed were Gracie Halford in 5C and our goalie, Ellie Maeve in 5T. Everyone enjoyed themselves but we all know we wouldn’t have participated in the tournament if it wasn’t for Mrs Fleet and Mr Sims, so a massive thankyou to them. Thank you also to all the parents who helped us get there.

By Poppy Tai and Annabel Stewart 6FT.

Well done to all the girls and a huge thank you to Mrs Fleet, Mr Sims and Mrs Olds for taking, coaching and supporting the children.

Year 5 Netball

After winning the Penair Cluster round our Year A team travelled to Penryn on the 10th March 2017 to play in the Peninsular finals.  10 Year 6 teams from around the West area battled it out to go through to the County finals.  We played a total of 7 games, winning 2-0 against both Illogan and St Johns School, Camborne.  Unfortunately we lost against 2 schools, Landewednack (7-1), Trewirgie (1-0) but drew with Perran-ar-worthal and Wendron schools 2-2.  For our final game we had to re-play St Johns, Cambnorne, this time they seemed a much stronger team and our defence had to work really hard, we were drawing 2-2 until the last few minutes of the game where St Johns scored again making the end result 3-2 to them.  We eventually finished the tournament in 8th place which is a great achievement for our first season of competition.  Well done to the whole team and thank you to the parents to drove to Penryn and supported us.

A team – Ellie-Maeve, Ella, Ellie, Silvenna, Jake, Jayden and Poppy.

Year 4 Boys’ Football Matches v Truro Prep School

On Tuesday 21st March 2017, our Year 4 A and B boys’ football teams went to Truro Prep School to play our annual football fixtures. It was a fantastic afternoon’s football in some very changeable conditions. The games kicked off in bright sunlight before the heavens opened and it became freezing cold and wet! The adults could shelter under the trees but the boys had to brave it and carry on.

Our A team played some brilliant football, with our front three of Oscar, Jack J and Louis linking up very impressively to create numerous chances. Captain Jack B was solid and influential in central midfield and our defenders of Sam and Alastair were strong and confident. Rory completed the line up with an assured performance in goal. The final score was 4-0 to Benson. Oscar scored two goals, including a fantastic free kick. Jack J scored the other two, the first finishing a fine team move and the second from distance.

Our B team match was an excellent, very closely fought battle. In what was the first ever competitive match for several of our players, Benson played well and improved as the game went on. Superb goalkeeping from our captain, Darwin, and excellent defending by Henry, Ameen and Alfie P kept us in the game in the first half. We also created chances of our own, with Ryan in particular going close. Jago’s movement up front was excellent and our midfielders, Ryan, Keby, Matthew and Jack, played well. In the second half, Truro Prep scored early. We then searched for an equaliser, creating several chances but not finding a goal. Then in the last few minutes, our midfield won the ball and passed to Henry just past the half way line. Henry then burst past the defence and smashed the goal past the goalkeeper to score the equaliser and a fantastic goal! The game finished 1-1 which was a fair result for such a closely fought game.

Well done to all of the children and a huge thanks to all of the parents who helped drive the children to Truro Prep and supported them in the cold and rain!

Year 5 and 6 Boys Football Matches v Truro Prep School

On Wednesday 15th March, 36 of our Year 5 and 6 boys went to Truro Prep School to play our annual football fixtures between the two schools. Each team played two matches each and it was an excellent afternoon’s football. For several of our players, it was our first ever competitive match! We won lots of games, drew a couple and lost a couple. Well done to all of the players and a big thank you to all of the parents who helped to take the children to Truro Prep.

Truro Primary Schools Handball Competition

On Friday 10th March, our Year 6 A and B handball teams took part in the Truro Primary Schools Handball tournament at Richard Lander. It was an excellent afternoon of sport and 14 teams took part. There were two pools of seven teams and the top two from each would qualify for the semi-finals.

Both of our teams did incredibly well and reached the semi-finals! Our A team won 5 and drew 1 game to confidently qualify in Pool A. In Pool B, our B team won 3, drew 1 and lost 2 to narrowly beat the third placed team to qualify in second place. Unfortunately. Both of our teams lost their semi-finals but ended up a fantastic joint third out of the 14 teams! Well done to all of the players.

County Individual Schools Table Tennis Championships

After becoming team county champions in the Autumn term, we sent 4 boys to Penryn College for the County individual championships on Friday 10th February. We really showed our strength in depth with all of our players qualifying from the group stages and four of our players reaching the quarter finals and three the semi-finals.

Alfie beat Ruan in a very close quarter final (11-9 11-9) to get to the semi-finals. Perran also won a close quarter –final to join Sam in the semis.  Sam then defeated Perran in the first semi-final and Alfie lost to a strong player from North Cornwall. The county final had some superb table tennis and in the end the player from North Cornwall was too strong and won 11-7, 11-7 and 11-7.

Well done to Sam, Ruan, Alfie and Perran and a huge thank you to Mrs Poppy for taking the children to Penryn.

Gymnastics

On Thursday 19th January, three of our gymnasts went to Penryn Gymnastics Centre to take part in the Partnership finals. The children qualified after coming 1st,2nd and third in the Truro competition in December. Therefore, we made up three out of the four members of the Penair primary schools team!

It was a fantastic morning’s gymnastics and all of our gymnasts, Maisy, Ela and Luke, did extremely well.

On Friday 6th January 16 pupils went to Truro School to compete at Penair’s Primary Swimming Gala. We were against Bosvigo , Kea and Devoran ( last year’s winners.) County Team Table Tennis Competition.

On Wednesday 14th December, we took three teams to the Cornwall Under 11s team table tennis competition at Penryn College.

It was a fantastic afternoon’s table tennis and all of our practice was rewarded with great success! Our B team reached the county final with a great 6-2 win against Bosvigo A in the semi-final. After defeating Bosvigo B 7-1, our C team then had a tough semi-final against our A team. Our A team won this to set up an all Archbishop Benson Final.

Some excellent table tennis was played in the final but, in the end, the A team were just too strong and won the game and the County championships with an 8-0 victory. This meant that we were County champions for the second year running! Our A team now go to Plymouth on Sunday January 15th for the South West England finals.

Well done to all the players and a huge thank you to Mrs Glanville for driving us to Penryn in the minibus.

KS2 Sportshall Athletics - Cornwall School Games Qualifier

On Friday 2nd December Mrs Williams took 20 Y3/4 athletes, followed by 20 Y5/6 athletes to Penair School to compete in this exciting Cornwall School Games Qualifier.  The children really enjoyed the range of disciplines which included relays, sprints, throwing and jumping.  They displayed superb sportsmanship in a very tense and highly exhilarating event.   The Y3/4 team managed to finish 1st overall with a total score of 144 points during the morning session.  The Y5/6 team came 2nd in their afternoon session with 108 points, missing first place by 12 points.  Their behaviour and team spirit was excellent and they did themselves and the school proud.  Well done to both teams!  The Y3/4 team will now go onto represent the Truro area Primary Schools at Penryn in the New Year.

Football matches v Truro Learning Academy

On Tuesday 15th November, our Year 6 and Year 4 A teams played against Truro Learning Academy.

Archbishop Benson A  6-1 TLA A

In this Rosewarne Shield  County Cup match, our Year 6 A team started slowly and soon went 1-0 down to TLA. However, this shook us into life and we came back to dominate the first half and score 4 goals. The second half was quieter but we still managed to score 2 goals. The final score was 6-1 to Benson. It wasn’t our best performance of the season but we are through to the next round! Our goals were scored by Freddie (4), Perran and an own goal.

Well done to Sam, Freddie, Jake, Lewis, Dan, Max, Perran, Noah and Oliver.

Benson Yr 4 4-2 TLA A

Our Year 4 A team also played against TLA’s School A team as they forgot to bring their Year 4 team. However, this didn’t faze us and we went out and played some excellent football. Excellent pressing from Alfie forced an own goal to put us in the lead and then he then scored an excellent header to make it 2-0.Our third goal came after a fantastic pass by Louis to set Jack J free. Jack finished clinically to make it 3-0 at half time.   The second half was more even but we scored a fourth when Jack J crossed to Oscar, who flicked in on to Alfie to again finish well. TLA came back well in the last few minutes to score twice to leave the final score 2-0 to Benson.

Well done to Oscar, Ryan, Jack J, Sam, Louis, Alfie, Jago, Henry, Darwin and Jack B.

Truro Primary Schools Football Competition

On Friday 4th November, our boys A team went to Truro College for the Truro Primary schools football tournament.

We won our group with a 3-1 victory, a 1-0 win and a 0-0 draw. We then played a semi-final against a strong St Agnes side. Unfortunately, we lost 3-0 but had a great afternoon.

Well done to Noah, Dan P, Sam P, Jake B, Oliver B, Perran R-G, Lewis S, Max D and Freddie I.

Year 4 Football tournament

On Friday 14th October, our Year 4 A and B teams went to the Penair Year 3 and 4 football competition. It was a fantastic afternoon with some excellent football played.

Our A team won their group with 3 wins and a draw, scoring 11 goals and conceding none. We beat Kea, Bosvigo and Tregolls and were unlucky to draw with St Marys. This put them into a final playoff match with the winners of the other group, St Erme. We saved our best football for the final and created chance after chance. However, their goalkeeper was exceptional and kept them in the game. Finally, we made a breakthrough when Jack J assisted Alfie, who finished clinically to win the game and the tournament.  It was a great performance from the boys and our amazing defence of Darwin (goalie), Jack B, Sam and Louis didn’t concede a single goal all day! Louis, Ryan and Jack played well in midfield and Alfie was excellent up front. However, the outstanding performer of the day and scorer of the best goal was Oscar, who was superb on the left wing!

Our B team also had a good afternoon and got better and better throughout the day. They lost their first match 4-0, their second 2-0 and were very unlucky to lose their third match 1-0. They could feel themselves improving all the time and were determined to get something out of their last game, against Tregolls B. They played really well and defended superbly to end the day with a well-earned draw and point. Henry was particularly impressive in goal and Jago led the line well up front.

A huge thank you to all the parents and Mr Crocker for helping to take the children to and from Penair.

The girls also played well and ended up coming 10th in Cornwall. Well done to all of the players and a huge thank you to Mrs Phillips and Mrs Olds for taking the children.

After qualifying from the Truro schools competition, on Wednesday 17th May 2017, we went to Redruth Rugby club for the West Cornwall Finals.

We won two and lost one of our group games to qualify for the quarter finals. Unfortunately, we lost this close match 1-0. However, we ended up in the top eight teams in the whole Western half of Cornwall!

Well done to all of the players and a huge thank you to Mr Thomas for his expert coaching and Mrs Glanville for taking the children to Redruth in the minibus.

Truro Schools Touch Rugby Competition

On Friday 5th May 2017, our tag rugby A and B teams went to Penair School to take part in the Truro primary schools touch rugby competition. There were 13 teams and it was a fun and competitive afternoon’s rugby. It was the first time that we had played touch rugby competitively after it replaced tag rugby this year.

Our A team did really well and came third to qualify for the West Cornwall finals at Redruth Rugby Club on 17th May. Our B team also played well and came 12th. Well done to all the children.

A huge thank you to Mr Thomas, Mrs Glanville and all of the parents for coaching, taking and supporting the children.

Coose Trennack Cross Country Races

What an amazing 2 weeks of achievement for ABB running club, held every Tuesday lunchtime by Mrs Williams. It all began with the exhilarating cross country race held at at Coose Trennack (Helston) where after shear determination ABB school were the overall winners, beating Devoran school (last years winners) by 1 point. A challenging terrain, which was conquered by all, especially by Yr3 ABB boys: 1st Tom Robilliard, 2nd Charlie Mitchell and 3rd Louis Tucker, but also managed to get 7 runners in the top 10. This was followed by the KS2 cross country race at Polwhele.

Polwhele races

On a beautiful spring morning last Saturday 24 children took part in the Polwhele annual cross country races.  The course was very demanding with a huge hill at the end.  14 children took part in the under 9s race and 10 took part in the under 11s race.

Medal winners were:

U9 boys - Myles R 1st

U9 girls - Izzy B 3rd

U11 boys - Benji H 2nd

Overall Archbishop Benson's team came a very close second to Polwhele School.

All the children finished the gruelling course and a big 'well done' goes to Florrie who gave 100% effort with an amazing sprint finish.

That finishes off our cross country season and we now look forward to an action packed term of athletics.

Year 4 Table Tennis Festival

On Friday 17th March 2017, twelve of our Year 4 children went to Penair School to take part in a table tennis festival. There were five schools takings part and it was an excellent and really fun afternoon of table tennis. Some of our players had played lots of table tennis before and some none at all.

The first hour was lots of different activities run by the Penair Sports leaders based on improving different skills linked to the sport and introducing the children to the game and the rules. The second hour was a table tennis doubles competition. All of our 6 pairs did brilliantly and 3 of our pairs won their competitions. Our A team pairs of Alfie and Oscar and Jack and Sam were both unbeaten all afternoon!

Cross Country County Finals

This was the final event in this seasons primary schools cross country calendar and was held at Newquay Sports Centre on Thursday 16th March.  The weather was kind to us with very little wind. Five of our pupils made it through the three qualifying rounds to get this far - fantastic!  The results were:

2nd Maisy P - year 4 girls race

21st Elizabeth G - year 5 girls race

20th Lewis T - year 5 boys race

29th Evie G - year 6 girls race

Freddie also tried to compete with an ongoing leg injury,  but had to pull out part way through - well done for trying so hard Freddie.

The children also all received team medals for representing the Peninsula area.

I am very proud of all the runners that have worked hard this season and look forward to working with you all in the summer term when we turn our skills towards athletics.

Don't forget there are two friendly running events this Saturday - Coose Trannack, and next Saturday - Polwhele (see previous newsletters for more info).

Year 5 Netball

Last Friday we took two teams to participate in the Truro Area Netball Qualifier tournament at Penair School.

 A Team

First we played Devoran, we were winning at half time by 3 goals which were all scored by Silvenna.  In the second half we increased our lead with 2 goals from Ella and Ellie scored our final goal just before the end of the match to make it a 6-0 win.  Next we played Bosvigo, who defended well.  In the end we won 2-0. We thought our third game against Kea School would be tough and we were really pleased when we won the game 2-0. Next we played Tregolls for the first time, winning 2-0.  Our last game was against our own friends, the B team, we enjoyed playing them and eventually won 5-0 with Jayden scoring most of the goals.  We were so happy to have won all our matches, and at the presentation we were announced as the Penair Cluster winners! This means that we go through to the Pennisular finals at Penryn.

The A team were Ellie, Ellie-Maeve, Ella, Elizabeth, Silvenna (captain), Jake, Jayden and Poppy

 B Team

This was the first time that we could have a B team. We were quite nervous before our first game against Kea School which we lost 3-1, Olivia G scored our first ever goal! The next teams we played were Devoran and Bosvigo, losing both games despite some great defence work by our team.  After a break we then played Tregolls School, this was a great match, we were very close to scoring but in the end we were happy with a draw of 0-0.  Our final game was against our own A team, which we lost 5-0.  We all enjoyed our first tournament and worked well together as a team.  We are looking forward to getting in some more practice before another tournament at the end of March.  Overall we came 5th in the Penair cluster.

The B team were Eliza, Ashleigh, Gaby, Evie, Amara, Oliva G, Hannah and Olivia H (captain)

County Cup Boys Football Match v Mount Hawke

Archbishop Benson 4-3 Mount Hawke

On Monday 12th December, we went to Mount Hawke to play a football County Cup match. It was one of the most exciting matches of the season and one of our best attacking and team performances. Every player fought hard for the team to earn a good victory. We created countless chances and scored some excellent goals.

We started extremely well and took a 3-0 lead .Mount Hawke came back into the game well in an exciting second half but we scored another goal to secure a 4-3 victory. Our goals were scored by Perran, Freddie (2) and a great individual strike by Lewis. Noah made some great saves in our goal.

Well done to: Noah, Dan, Sam, Jake, Lewis, Perran, Oliver and Freddie and a huge thank you to all of the parents who helped take the boys to Mount Hawke.

Key Stage 2 Cross Country Races

On Thursday 8th December, we had our annual Key Stage 2 cross-country races. The children had been training hard over the last few weeks for their races and this was evident in some excellent running.

Everyone tried their hardest and showed real sportsmanship and encouragement for their teammates. Well done to Grindal, who won the house cup this year, narrowly beating Islip, Beckett and Tenison.

A huge thank you to Mrs Williams for all the hard work that she put into organising the races and to our hares, Mrs Bullen and Mrs Fleet. Also, thank you to all the staff and parents who helped as marshals and serving refreshments.

Boys Football League match v Devoran

Benson 2-2 Devoran

On Monday 5th December, our A team played Devoran in a league match. We started well and created loads of chances. The first half was one of our best performances but we just couldn’t turn the chances into goals. We went close and their goalie made some excellent saves. Against the run of play, they scored to go 1-0 up. However, we fought back and Freddie scored an absolutely fantastic individual goal to make it 1-1. We had chances to go ahead but then Devoran scored again. Thankfully, we kept going and Freddie scored a second to draw the match. In the second half, Lewis S was a standout performer and played some of his best football for Benson.

Truro Primary Schools Gymnastics Competition

On Friday 25th November, our gymnastics team went to Aspire Gym to compete in the Truro Schools Gymnastics competition.

Unfortunately, our star gymnast of the last few years, Katie, was struck down with illness just before the competition began and couldn’t compete. However, the rest of the team rose to the occasion and performed incredibly. In the end, Maisy came first out of all the schools in the Penair cluster, Ela was second and Luke third! This means that they all qualify for the next round. Well done to all the gymnasts and a huge thank you to Mrs Dawes and Mrs Polkinghorne for taking the children.

Boys Football Matches v Truro Prep School.

On Monday 7th November, our Year 5 and Year 6 boys football A teams played Truro Prep School.

Benson Year 6 A 3-1 Truro Prep A

Our Year 6 A team match was a league game. It was a well contested affair and we took the lead early through Freddie. Truro Prep equalised but we managed to score again just before half time when Lewis S finished to make it 2-1. There were chances for both teams in the second half and we managed to grab a third goal when Jake scored to put the result beyond doubt.

Benson Year 5 A 3-2 Truro Prep B

Our Year 5s also played well and managed to earn a deserved 3-2 victory against Truro Prep B. We played really well as a team with some excellent passing and teamwork. Our goals were scored by Lewis T, Jayden and Bradley C. Sid played particularly well in midfield and Ollie B was strong at the back.

Boys’ Football

On Monday 10th October, our A, B and C football teams went to Mount Hawke to play in some football matches. Our A team were unlucky to lose 2-0 and our B and C teams both drew 0-0 in closely fought matches.

Thank you to all the parents who helped take the children to Mount Hawke.

Year 4 Badminton Festival

On Friday 7th October 2016, six Year 4 children went to Richard Lander School for a badminton festival. They had lots of fun playing different games and practising different skills that lead into badminton.

Thank you to Mrs Tangye and Miss Haggis for taking the children to Richard Lander.

Boys Football

On Friday 30th September, our football team went to Biscovey Academy, St Austell, for the central Cornwall football qualifying competition. The top three teams would qualify for the County finals later in the term.

We had three group games and had to finish in the top two to qualify for a play-off for a place in the final.  We started slowly but got better and managed to qualify in second. We beat Mount Charles (4-1), drew with St Stephens (1-1) and lost to Sandy Hill 1-0, despite creating many chances to score.

It came down to a play-off against St Mewan, the winner going through to the County finals. We saved our best football for when it mattered, winning 3-0. We showed great determination and teamwork in the final game and Perran and Freddie scored some fantastic goals. Noah deserves a special mention for some outstanding goalkeeping all afternoon.

Well done to Noah, Sam, Max, Luke, Jake, Dan, Perran, Lewis and Freddie and a huge thank you to Mr Phillips and Mr Issaka for driving the boys to St Austell.

Girls’ Football Festival
